MARK DIETLEIN
Co-Founder & Chief Executive Officer

SALLY DIETLEIN
Co-Founder & Artistic Director

During the past four decades, Mark and Sally Dietlein have helped grow Hale Centre Theatre from humble beginnings to one of the most successful performing arts organizations in the United States. Today, Hale Centre Theatre performs almost 900 performances annually on the most technologically advanced theatrical stage for live theatre in the world and attracts nearly 600,000 patrons to its unique 130,000 square-foot facility in Sandy, Utah.

Mark and Sally have been partners and collaborators since Mark’s grandparents, Ruth and Nathan Hale, convinced them to leave their jobs as a successful business executive and English teacher to help found Hale Centre Theatre in 1985. The duo has helped the theatre expand three times, from its original location in South Salt Lake with 220 seats, to West Valley City in 1998 with 530 seats, to the current Sandy theatre in 2017, which has two stages (with another one on the way) that plays to audiences of as many as 1,378 per night. As part of its expansion, the family donated Hale Centre Theatre to the community in 1997 by making it a non-profit organization, which today is led by a board of trustees of leading business, civic and community leaders.

Mark, who currently serves as president and CEO, and Sally, who is the artistic director, believe the success of Hale Centre Theatre is more than the record number of patrons and performances, it also includes the organization’s impact. This encompasses providing full and part-time jobs for more than 800 people each year, providing more than $40 million annually in economic impact and making numerous contributions to the community, including donating 20,000 tickets annually to various charitable organizations. For Mark and Sally, theatre is a family affair spanning six generations. Mark grew up in theatre as did his parents, grandparents and great-grandmother.

Today, Mark and Sally’s grandchildren perform at Hale Centre Theatre and their oldest son, Quinn, serves as executive director. Additionally, their son, Adam, used Hale Centre Theatre as a stepping-stone to perform on Broadway.

Mark and Sally have received numerous awards and honors, including Utah’s Pioneer of Progress Award for the Arts, the Titan Award by the South Valley Chamber, the Bronze Minute Man by the Utah National Guard and more than 30 Best of State awards. Both Mark and Sally graduated from Brigham Young University.
